An opportunity to work with a local basketball team, and some shots from their second team match at Beckets Sports Centre. Beckets has no spectator area, not even a balcony, just a few glazed windows on the upper level, so no chance to photo from above. There’s no spectator area in the hall, so I was squashed into a corner or side wall. Sometimes it was quite hard to isolate the action – a melee of arms, legs and bodies all moving at the same time. Nevertheless its an interesting and (at this time of year particularly) relatively comfortable sport to get involved with.
I’ve recently acquired “Digital Sports Photography” by G. Newman Lowrance. Although this is an American publication, and their basketball teams seem to play in vast arenas with hundreds of spectators, I gained some useful tips in advance of this match. One in particular is that basketball photographers tend to take cushions to sit on as the floor is pretty hard! I hadn’t got a cushion, but folded my coat to sit on – a note for next time – get a cushion!
It seemed quite fast and furious, but was told that the first team play considerably faster – that’s going to be a challenge for me!
