Another chapter in the Blue Square Premier league adventure.
Well, the Hyde Tigers turned out to be pussycats at a home game. Hyde scored first in the first half. Then got a player sent off for a 2nd yellow card in the second half. Dartford got their claws out and scored 2 goals for the win.
The Grimsby Mariners sunk without trace after a second half storm by Dartford. That ended a ten-match winning run for Grimsby. Strange sign on the outside of the ground ‘No Ball Games’.
Seriously? Main sponsor is Youngs of the fish industry, whose chairman was previously on the Board of the club.
Grimsby have a ‘Press Room’, a dingy portacabin that offers some tea/coffee and a few seats and a TV. Was rather depressing so I went outside. The stewards were a friendly bunch. The Dartford supporters were confined to a stand at one end of the pitch. There must have been two hundred, and they made lots of noise. In fact the Grimsby supporters become decidedly un-vocal as their team were unable to come back from a 2:0 defeat. There was a surreal moment when the Dartford supporters did an impromptu Conga in the stand, wearing wigs and sou’westers. I noticed that the Grimsby supporters started leaving in numbers before the end of the game.
Appropriate sponsorship: The Youngs logo sits nicely on the front of the Grimsby jersey. Goes back to the days of Newcastle Brown Ale sponsoring Newcastle. Now we have all sorts of Premier League sponsors which have absolutely nothing to do with the club or its geographical location. The designer in me loathes the way the logos are just thrown on the kits without any consideration of ‘how’ it looks, just slap it on BIG.
A panorama of the ground from my Samsung EX1 which is great for this sort of thing.
AFC Telford, the Bucks, play in the same color combination home colors as Dartford. Their away colors are purple/white so that should be colourful. Manager Andy Sinton has been struggling to put out his best squad for a while due a number of injuries to key players. And they played really well, beat Dartford quite soundly, which was a bit of a surprise. Time to rally and re-group, Team.
